Andrew Godfrey
BAppSc(Optom)Hons. CertOcTher (UNSW), GAICD
A founding partner in Eye5 Optometrists since 2004, Andrew has a special interest in caring for patients with complicated eye conditions, particularly those with corneal conditions and cataracts. He has a keen interest in contact lens fitting for people who have Keratoconus or corneal grafts. He has introduced hybrid contact lenses to Western Australia to help people who find RGP or hard contact lenses uncomfortable. There are very few practitioners left who have a special interest in this area.
Andrew worked for many years at the Lions Eye Institute as a clinical optometrist. As the Institute grew he took over management of optometry staff across two hospitals along with management of the Lions Laser Vision Centre. Having seen the results of thousands of LASIK procedures and been involved in the development, installation and training of the latest in laser technology he is well placed to give advice on the full range of vision correction.
He has studied all aspects of contact lens wear and care for many years. He has even written a text book chapter on tears and contact lenses in Contact Lenses (5th Edition) Phillips and Speedwell.
He has also worked as a consultant involved in ophthalmology research for a start up company based in Orange County, California. This company raised over 125 million dollars for ophthalmic research and product development. He has also travelled throughout the world teaching and certifying eye clinics.
Since graduation from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Brisbane in 2000 with a university medal, Andrew has continued his post graduate study receiving a Graduate certificate in ocular therapeutics in 2011 from the University of NSW. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Andrew was the deputy chairman of the national office of Optometrists Association Australia based in Melbourne and was the president of the Western Australian division for many years. After 10 years helping optometrists throughout Australia, he is now concentrating on helping people to see better in Perth.
Michelle Beach
Bachelor of Optometry (UNSW), Master of Optometry, Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics
Michelle completed her Bachelor of Optometry at UNSW in 2000 and a Master of Optometry in 2013 (Specialty Contact Lenses, Behavioural Optometry and Evidence Based Optometry). Along with Andrew, in 2011 she was one of the first optometrists in WA to complete a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics, allowing her to prescribe a variety of medicines for the eye.
Michelle has spent many years in private practice and enjoys seeing a variety of patients both adults and children. She has significant experience examining young children, navigating learning difficulties and vision, treating binocular vision disorders, orthokeratology, low dose atropine for myopia as well as fitting complex contact lenses.
She provides regular eyecare to regional and remote communities in WA with Lions Outback Vision.
Marna Claassen
Optometry (University of Auckland), ACO Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision. Therapeutically endorsed
Marna decided to pursue optometry as it combines her love of science, problem solving, and people! Her caring nature and genuine interest in getting to know each patient helps Marna create a management plan that is specific to each person’s visual needs and goals. Marna is a therapeutically endorsed optometrist and is interested in all aspects of optometry, particularly paediatric care, myopia control and contact lenses. Marna’s love of paediatric care has led her to complete the Australian College of Optometry Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision.
After completing an Undergraduate Degree majoring in Physiology with minor in Anatomy at the University of Otago, Marna studied Optometry at Auckland University. Giving back is something Marna is passionate about, and she has been a participant for a number of outreach programs. She was selected as a One Sight scholarship recipient in New Zealand, assisting with free eye care in the North Island, as well as being selected as a Unite for Sight Global Impact Fellow travelling to India to establish and operate free eye clinics in rural and disadvantaged communities.
In her free time, Marna enjoys exploring WA in her vintage camper van and if it’s a sunny day, you can bet she’ll be at the beach.
Rachna Desai
Optometry, University of Wales, Cardiff
Rachna has been working in optics since the age of 16. She completed her Optometry degree at the University of Wales, Cardiff in 2001. Rachna together with her husband, moved to Perth in 2009 and completed her conversion in 2010. She has been working in various settings since; small independent practice and alongside ophthalmologists at the Lions Eye Institute.
Outside of work she has her 2 boys who keep her busy! She likes to practice yoga whenever she can fit it in between work and family life.
